First created in 1974 by Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson, Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) has gained cultural acclaim steadily. Regarded as the beginning of modern role-playing games (RPGs), the community surrounding D&D finds an escape from their everyday lives through the game, an overlooked percentage being women who use the game to escape gendered behavioral expectations. By abolishing most gender roles and avoiding common, sexist tropes prevalent in other high fantasy, Dungeons and Dragons proves its intellectual value by creating a space where equality between men and women is the standard. Except if you’re a Drow.
